For A Day of Declaration

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

Those were some of the words that were accepted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776….probably some of the most famous words of that declaration.  It was a declaration that changed the course of history….when we went from a rebellion against taxes and no representation in parliament to a full-on revolution for independence.

We now sit here in 2007, some 231 years after we declared our independence from Great Britain and we look back.  What is now our greatest ally was once our greatest enemy.  And wars of today….even wars of independence….are nothing like the war we fought so long ago.

So what battles does our future hold?  The strive for full freedom has not ended. But no longer is it considered war but just cause.  The fight for freedom might be said is overseas in other oppressed nations…as we help to instill democracy in other parts of the world. But the fight for full freedom is much closer than that.  It is here at home where the battle still wages.

That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

This time, though, we aren’t in a struggle against another nation.  This time…is is ourselves that we fight against.  We fight against tyranny and oppression from the current administration that has been governing this land however they see fit since January 2001.  It is that in which we fight today….it is that that threatens our freedom.

When the rights of a group are not equal to the rights of the majority, then there can’t possibly be freedom.  Throughout our own history this struggle was continued….for women’s rights and for the rights of African Americans.  Today, we have not learned from what history has taught us.  Those struggles still continue….for they still are not fully equal.  And even more struggles have been brought into the mix.  History is cyclical in nature….and what happens once will happen again.  It is time that we learn from out past mistakes to cut off present and future ones before they take place.

When the elected government no longer looks out for the interest of all its citizens, then it ceases to be an effective government.  The current administration in Washington has never looked out for the interest of every US citizen.  It sees a difference in who we are.  If you aren’t the same as them, then they are against you.  They have tried to take away the rights of American citizens without even a second glance….and they have infringed on the rights of all citizens of this nation. And they continue to do so unchecked.

This is not freedom as it was intended….this is becoming downright tyranny at its very core.  And its time for the government officials and those lobbying those officials from the outside to be held accountable for their acts.  One could say that it has become almost treason with what this adminstration has let be done to the American public.  It is no longer a just cause to do the right thing even its not popular.  The approach that is now taken is they’ll do whatever they want and worry about the people later.  And it is of utmost important that they oppress the people who are trying to speak up and call them on their treasonous acts so that history does not judge them too harshly.

Unfortunately, in today’s society, we cannot be silenced.  And just like Thomas Paine used the media to help rally the American public behind the just cause of a revolution, we now use the media to help fight the tyranny and oppression….not overseas but here at home. As we can see throughout history….and even with our own revolution, the struggle did not end with a mere document.   It took action in order for us to gain our independence from King George III.  So let this be a document…a call to action…to call for an end to the oppression and the tyranny that we let rain down on our nation with each passing day.  Election year is only a year away….and that is when it is our time to be of sound mind and judgement to vote for those that stand steadfast and work for the good off all mankind….not just the chosen few.  And until then, it is our solemn duty to stand firm and to keep making ourselves be heard whenever they are trying to oppress us.

And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.
